Letter from the President

Welcome to Southern Association of Marine Educators (SAME) website!

The Southern Association of Marine Educators (SAME) is the regional chapter of the National Marine Educators Association (NMEA) for the northern Gulf of Mexico, and includes Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and the panhandle of Florida. Our chapter motto is making known the world of water, both salt and fresh, and includes folks from all walks of life and backgrounds, including members who come from universities, museums, government agencies, aquariums, zoos, science, marine research and business. All of us have a love of marine and aquatic wildlife and habitats, and we come together to learn from each other, share ideas, and have fun!

The National Marine Educators Association (NMEA) is a vibrant and influential professional association that has been in existence since 1975. Through our national office, seventeen regional chapters and international partners, we, “make known the world of water, both fresh and salt.” Our membership consists of about 1,000 classroom teachers, informal educators, college professors, ocean scientists, and outreach and communication professionals at non-profit organizations and government agencies. You can learn more about NMEA by going to

SAME is very honored to announce that in 2013, SAME will host the national conference of NMEA in Mobile, Alabama July 21 – 26. The conference will feature speakers such as Richard Louv, Mark LaSalle, and Dr. George Crozier among others. Field trips will invite folks to explore the native habitats, food and rich culture of the region. Evening events include an night at the Saegner Theater for our keynote address by Richard Louv, as well as a night at Dauphin Island Sea Lab (complete with Mardi Gras parade!), and a relaxing evening at the 5 Rivers Center. If you are not a member of SAME, now is the time to become a member and join us for what promises to be a fantastic conference showcasing all the rich natural and cultural treasures the Gulf of Mexico region has to offer!
